The Smallest Backpack,
I wanted to get the smallest, neatest backpack I could find. Most stores have several packs but they are huge contraptions with multiple zippers, straps and compartments. Not that that’s bad, but I wanted the simplest one I could find. All I needed was room for a very small laptop and a sketchbook.
I suddenly remembered back in high-school when I had a very simple Army backpack. I went looking for it. That pack is this “musette” bag.
I ordered this one from the Supply Sargeant and I was not disappointed. It arrived on time and in good condition. The first time I went to wear it however, I was reminded of its particular problem that I had discovered all those years ago in high school. There are two clips at the end of the shoulder straps which attach to D-rings at the bottom of this bag. Unfortunately, these clips dig into your back just under the shoulder blades. This bag was probably designed to be worn on suspenders or suspended from another bag, not directly on the back, because it gets paintful fast.
I fixed it by buying the smallest paint roller I could find at Target. I took the roller off the handle, cut it in half and slipped one over each of the clips and then re-clipped them to the D-rings.
These tiny rollers, maybe 2″ in diameter, are perfect because they won’t collapse around the clips and the small amount of fuzzy painting surface cushions them against your back.
Enjoy!

|Great for panniers,
I bought these to use as panniers on my bike. Just do a google search for “DIY bicycle panniers” and you’ll find tons of ideas on how to make them. The full-size map sleeve in the back of the bag makes for a great spot to put a backing board (so the bag won’t deform and get caught up in the spokes or gears) and attach hooks. The shoulder straps detach from the bottom of the bag at a D-ring – they can be easily tucked away and then reattached when you need them.

|Not to shabby,
Got these bags in today. For the price the overall condition is very good. I plan to use these as a pannier set for my commute bike. The only negative point that I have is that one of the buckle straps had the metal end tab barely installed. Actually I pulled on it a little and it came right off. Same for the other strap. For me it wasn’t a big deal as I was able to modify it with some primitive stitching techniques. So not bad for $10.
